The Bean Box
About This Spot
Stepping into The Bean Box is like uncovering a quiet secret nestled just below street level, where the gentle murmur of the River Wye blends with the rustle of trees and leaves. This tucked-away coffee spot exudes an unhurried calm, a riverbank retreat that invites visitors to pause and savor moments steeped in simplicity and care.
The pace here slows naturally, mirroring the soft flow of water nearby. Surrounded by greenery and with seating that curves around a small garden or stretches out close to the river’s edge, the atmosphere feels intimate yet open—perfect for both quiet reflection and light conversation. Whether emerging from a morning rain or basking in dappled sunlight beneath an apple tree, the space never feels rushed or crowded, but quietly welcoming.
At The Bean Box, coffee is an experience that honors its roots—both literally and figuratively. Crafted from beans roasted just a few miles away in Ross on Wye, each cup speaks of thoughtful care, its warmth and texture a welcome companion on a riverbank stroll or a moment’s respite after a canoe trip. Alongside the coffee, simple yet satisfying bites like freshly baked pastries and thoughtful vegan options appear as natural extensions of this easygoing place — food that feels honest, patiently made, and best enjoyed without hurry.
This is a corner of Hay-on-Wye where the small details matter: the wooden tables dotted with plants, the gentle soundscape of nature intertwined with soft conversations, and the friendly smile from behind the counter, quietly making your cup just right. The Bean Box invites you to experience coffee not merely as a drink, but as a backdrop for mindful, unpretentious moments by the river.

Tucked away below street level on the river bank this little Cafe is trying hard to stand out from the predictability of obvious places more or less traditional. I visited after a rainy spell so the outdoor area was a bit washed out and yet I managed to have my breakfast sitting under an apple tree, oat latte and vegan pastries and rolls. The highlight of my morning was a "cruffin" , a sumptuous hybrid chou pastry creation: a vertical croissant turning into a muffin with icing sugar and a melted chocolate centre, one of the best things I ate in 2023 so far! If you would like to try it - and so you should - head to the Bean Box on Saturday mornings, the earlier the better. Besides the cruffin and almond croissant there are several cake slices and a surprisingly good selection of hot drinks for such a small place I dare say that most of the customers are local and there are enough seats to enjoy a peaceful coffee and read a book surrounded by the green arms of Mother Nature. Must be a hit in the Summer or on sunny days but even in November was a great find!

Only had a takeaway flat white for my riverbank walk but it was beautifully made. So good had a second on my way back. Made with superb coffee roasted in Ross on Wye. Garden very pretty.

Lovely little place! We were on a canoeing experience up river, end of our journey and pick up point ended here. Very quaint and quiet, loads of plants with scenery overlooking the bridge and river. Toilets, food and coffee. The lady who served us was polite and lovely. Nice experience.

After wandering around Haye on Wye for nearly two hours trying to find a spot for Coffee & Cake that wasn't overrun by Wasps, stumbled upon this little place while walking the dog. Friendly service, lovely coffee and delicious cake, and no Wasps! Will definitely come again.
